Theatrefest 2026 to Celebrate Yoruba Arts and Ijebu Heritage in Ijebu-Ode

Date:

The richness of Yoruba performance, storytelling and indigenous creativity will take centre stage when Theatrefest 2026: Festival of Yoruba Arts holds in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Organised by the Odun Dun Theatre Troupe, the festival will take place at Voicenel Cinema Hall, Equity Resort Hotel, Erunwon, Ijebu-Ode, beginning at noon.

The event is themed “Preserving Heritage Through Theatre and Art”. It is designed to celebrate Yoruba culture while paying particular attention to the history, identity and traditions of the Ijebu people.

The programme will feature stage drama performances, oral narratives, folklore, folktales, riddles, traditional games and chants. Traditional music, dance and fashion will also form part of the festival experience.

Beyond entertainment, Theatrefest 2026 is expected to serve as a platform for cultural education and heritage preservation. Organisers hope the festival will help younger generations understand indigenous traditions through creative performances and direct interaction with cultural practitioners.

Awards and recognition will also be presented during the festival, while participants will have access to networking opportunities and an industry marketplace connecting performers, artists, cultural entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.

The event also seeks to promote cultural tourism by attracting visitors interested in Yoruba history, theatre and traditional arts to Ijebu-Ode. Its location within the wider Erunwon and Ijebu cultural environment offers guests the opportunity to experience both performance and place.

According to the organisers, the festival is more than a gathering of entertainers. It is being positioned as a homecoming, a reunion and a commitment to ensuring that Yoruba heritage is not forgotten.

Theatrefest 2026 is expected to bring together actors, dancers, drummers, storytellers, fashion practitioners, researchers and cultural enthusiasts in a shared celebration of identity.

Through its combination of theatre, oral tradition and visual culture, the festival will contribute to the ongoing effort to preserve indigenous knowledge and present it in forms that remain relevant to contemporary audiences.
