Historian and cultural researcher Bunmi Adetona has visited the historic 99-room house of Sanusi Adebisi Idikan in Ibadan, describing the experience as a powerful reminder of the importance of documenting and preserving Yoruba history.
During the visit, Adetona explored parts of the iconic residence and examined original business documents belonging to Adebisi Idikan, one of Ibadan’s most celebrated entrepreneurs. According to him, the records offer a rare insight into how successful indigenous businesses were managed decades ago.
He noted that such historical documents provide valuable evidence of the region’s economic history, helping researchers understand the entrepreneurial systems, trade practices and business culture that shaped Yorubaland beyond oral accounts.
“There is still a lot to learn from this place, and I will continue visiting to study, document, and share what I discover,” Adetona said.
He added that more attention should be given to preserving the stories of influential figures like Adebisi Idikan, whose contributions played a significant role in the economic development of Ibadan and the wider Yoruba region.
Adetona also hinted that he would be sharing more findings from the visit in the coming days, as part of his ongoing efforts to document important aspects of Yoruba heritage for future generations.
The visit highlights the growing interest among historians, researchers and cultural advocates in preserving historical landmarks and archival materials that tell the story of Nigeria’s indigenous entrepreneurs and cultural legacy.
