Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya Makes History as First Woman Directly Elected NBA President

Date:

Nigeria’s legal profession has reached another historic milestone as Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, has been elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), becoming the first woman to be directly elected to the association’s highest office by its members.

Her election also makes her the second female President in the NBA’s history since the association was established in 1960.

While her emergence has been widely celebrated as a groundbreaking achievement, it is important to note that she is not the first woman to serve as NBA President. The late Priscilla Kuye made history as the association’s first female president when she served from 1991 to 1992, succeeding Clement Akpamgbo after his appointment as Nigeria’s Attorney General of the Federation.

What distinguishes Badejo-Okusanya’s victory is that she is the first woman to secure the office through a direct election by NBA members, breaking a decades-long electoral barrier in one of Nigeria’s most influential professional bodies.

Her election has been hailed as a significant step forward for gender inclusion and leadership within the legal profession, inspiring a new generation of female lawyers to aspire to the highest levels of professional service.

As she prepares to lead the Nigerian Bar Association into a new chapter, legal practitioners and stakeholders across the country have expressed confidence that her tenure will strengthen the association’s role in promoting justice, the rule of law and professional excellence.

Her historic victory stands as another reminder of the growing representation of women in leadership positions across Nigeria’s professional landscape.

Congratulations to Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her landmark achievement.
